Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is performed to remove excess skin and/or fat around the eyes.  Eyelid skin is normally smooth, but with time the eyelid tissues stretch and the muscles weaken. This can leave eyelids looking puffy and wrinkly.  Patients may also notice that they appear unhappy or tired.  An outpatient eyelid blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) will address these issues and help to restore a more youthful, rested and natural appearance.

What can I expect?

Dr. Jennifer Hui will meet with you to discuss your goals and concerns and develop a customized surgical plan.  Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in the office or in an outpatient surgery center.  She will help you determine the most appropriate setting for your procedure.  The eyelids are numbed with a local anesthetic.  The incision in the upper eyelid will be hidden in your natural crease.  If needed, fat will be removed through this same incision.  In the lower eyelid, the fat may be removed through an incision placed inside the eyelid.  Skin may be removed through an incision placed in your natural lower lid laugh lines.  With blepharoplasty, the stitches are dissolvable and we ask that you avoid strenuous activity for one week after surgery.  Most patients find that their swelling and bruising improve greatly after two weeks, but healing is dependent upon each individual.  Once healing is complete, the goal is a natural, refreshed appearance.

Special consideration must be taken in some cases.

  • Male blepharoplasty  The male eyelid differs from that of the female. Dr. Hui will take care to carefully plan the placement of your incision in the upper eyelid (the crease is lower in men than in women). A more conservative approach is undertaken with men to avoid a feminized look. The goal, as with all eyelid surgery, is a natural appearance that is congruent with a person’s specific desire.
  • Asian blepharoplasty  The Asian eyelid requires extra attention to detail. The crease is lower, and the lid in general has a fuller appearance. Asians often have more fat in the eyelids, and maintaining this natural appearance is the key to a pleasing outcome. Dr. Hui will take the time to carefully examine your eyelids and discuss your goals. Together, you will develop a customized surgical plan to help you achieve your vision.
