Lateral Canthoplasty

Larger and brighter looking eyes can dramatically enhance the overall facial appearance. It is possible to achieve this look with the help of lateral canthoplasty cosmetic surgery procedure. The surgeon may create a bigger eye shape by increasing the length of the lateral canthal angle and correcting the raised outer tail of the eyes with lateral canthoplasty.

The surgeon must be performed by a skilled surgeon to ensure that there is no overcorrection, and the patient does not end up with an angry or stubborn look of the upper face.

Outstanding and amazing oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Hui provides lateral canthoplasty to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and surrounding locations.

Procedure

Reconstructive orbital surgery technique is one of the key techniques in lateral canthoplasty. In this technique, the surgeon will detach the complete lateral aspect of the eye, and reconstruct it according to the required eye width. This procedure is typically performed along with changing of the lateral tilt of the eyes. This can be done as the surgeon detaches the external part of the eye and then reattached it at an appropriate height relative to the inner eye corner.

In lateral canthoplasty, the lateral tilt also constitutes an important aspect. It plays a vital role in make a natural facial expression and defining the patient’s gender. If the lateral tilt is high, it may create an angry look, while a slightly shallow tilt wil help create a softer and gentler appearance. If there is no tilt or a horizontal lateral aspect, it indicates a male appearance.

If the outer corner of the eye is lower in height than the inner corner even slightly, it will make the person appear dull and weary. Lateral canthoplasty can be used to correct all such conditions. The procedure is also used to improve the proportion between the color aspect and the white aspect of the eyes.

A good balance between the pigmented iris and the whites of the eye shows an aesthetically appealing eye appearance. If the whites of the inner eye show more than the whites of the outer eye, the individual’s eyes may appear closed and uninviting. This imbalance can be corrected with lateral canthoplasty.

Lateral canthoplasty is an ideal procedure for certain candidates, who may have eyes with a very pleasing crease, but may still lack an attractive facial appearance because of the unpleasant lateral tilt. The procedure is typically performed together with double eyelid surgery. The surgeon may use local anesthesia with oral sedation to perform this procedure. The procedure can be completed in about one hour.

Following the surgery, the incisions will be closed with fine sutures. As the surgery area is close to the eyeball, the surgeon will use soft thread sutures to minimize eyeball irritation.

Recovery

The sutures will be removed in about one week after the lateral canthoplasty. Main swelling and bruising will subside in about one week, but complete swelling will resolve gradually over two to three months.
