Lower blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that may be performed to eliminate loose skin and wrinkles around the lower eyelids and remove under eye bags. During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will discuss the steps involved in the lower eyelid lift procedure. Once the patient fully understands the procedure, it will help to relieve them of anxiety and make them feel more confident.

Dr. Jennifer Hui is a dedicated oculoplastic surgeon providing lower eyelid lift and various other eye related cosmetic and medical procedures. Patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and surrounding communities have an opportunity to receive lower eyelid and other surgeries from Dr. Hui.

DETERMINING CANDIDACY

The first step involved in the procedure will be to determine whether the patient is a fabulous candidate for lower eyelid surgery. The surgeon may recommend this procedure if the patient’s eyes appear tired even after sufficient rest or sleep, eye bags are conspicuously present below the eyes, skin around the eyes is sagging, and patient finds it difficult to apply eye makeup.

The surgeon may not choose a candidate if they are afflicted with an eye disease such as dry eyes, or an untreated infection that may interfere with the surgery. Lower blepharoplasty procedure is designed to take several years off the eyes for the right candidates.

PERFORMING THE SURGERY

The eye surgeon may choose one of the following two approaches to perform lower eyelid lift procedure:

Transcutaneous Surgical Approach

This approach involves an external incision made beneath the eyelashes to perform the surgery through the skin. When both skin and muscle are sagging, the surgeon may use this approach. The delicate orbicularis oculi muscle, which supports the lower eyelid, must be preserved while creating incisions and flaps. Any weakness in the muscle integrity can alter the shape of the eye.

Transconjunctival Surgical Approach

This approach involves an internal incision in the lower eyelid. The orbicularis oculi muscle integrity is not affected with this technique, allowing the surgeon to maintain the shape of the eye more easily. However, the surgeon should have an intricate understanding of the eye structures in order to perform lower eyelid lift with an internal incision.

LATERAL CANTHUS CORRECTION

As an additional procedure, the oculoplastic surgeon will correct the lateral canthus or the outer corner of the eye. This is critical for eye shape and support. If attention is not paid to this aspect, the outer corners can become rounded instead of angular after the lower blepharoplasty. Advanced surgical techniques are used to restore support and cosmetically improve the outer corners of the eyes.

Dr. Hui receives patients from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and nearby areas for lower blepharoplasty.

RECOVERY

Post-operative recovery is an important part of the lower eyelid surgery treatment process. The patient should give adequate rest to the eyes in the first week, and protect them against light and sunshine. The first follow-up appointment with the surgeon will usually take place at the end of first week.

Mild bruising and swelling will usually occur after lower eyelid surgery, but will fade away in about one week. Most patients can return to work in one week. A follow-up appointment with the surgeon will usually be scheduled at the end of the first week.
