Lower eyelid surgery, clinically known as lower blepharoplasty, is usually a safe procedure with a low incidence of complications.
However, as eyes are the most sensitive external organ in the body, it is vital that any cosmetic surgery around the eyes should only be performed by a specialist. On their part, the patient should be willing to cooperate with the surgeon and carefully follow their instructions for safe outcomes.
Dr. Jennifer Hui is a proven and perceptive oculoplastic surgeon providing lower eyelid lift and other cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures. The hard working and stellar Dr. Hui will apprise the patient of the potential risks during the initial consultation. She provides lower blepharoplasty to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and surrounding locations across the horizon.
Serious Complications
Severe complications in lower eyelid lift may only occur in very rare cases. These may include ectropian, hematoma and retinal detachment. Ectropian is a kind of droopy effect that will result in the lower eyelid becoming inverted. If this condition occurs after lower eyelid surgery, a revision procedure may have to be performed.
Hematoma refers to fluid collection beneath the skin in the incision areas. The risk may be higher when both lower and upper eyelid procedures are performed along with additional surgeries such as facelift or forehead lift. The surgeon will usually place temporary drain tubes under the skin to collect fluid and reduce the risk.
Retinal detachment may occur in extremely rare cases. This causes the retina to separate from the outer layers of the eye. Tears or holes in the retina may cause this condition. Retinal detachment can be corrected with additional surgery.
Additional Risks
Some of the less severe complications that may occur following lower eyelid surgery may include:
- Infection
- Excessive tearing
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia
- Dry eyes
- Burning sensation in the eyes
- Unfavorable scarring
- Appearance of whiteheads
- Poor ability to keep the eyes closed during sleep
- Blurry or double vision
These conditions often clear up without the need for any specific treatment, but in some cases, the complication may persist for a longer time, or may become permanent. Remarkable and profound eye surgeon Dr. Hui receives patients from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and other communities and neighborhoods in this area of SoCal for lower eyelid surgery.
Side Effects
Mild Pain and Irritation
The patient is likely to experience mild discomfort, irritation and soreness in the incision sites in the first few days. Once the effect of anesthesia goes off, the patient will feel tightness in the lower eyelids. The surgeon may prescribe painkillers for a few days to keep the patient comfortable during recovery.
Swelling
Some redness and minor swelling may occur in the treated areas after lower eyelid surgery. Cold compresses or ice therapy should be used in the first two to three days to minimize swelling.
Scarring
Some degree of scarring is inevitable in any surgery, but the scars will usually be well-hidden in natural skin creases, and will typically become more inconspicuous over time.
