Eyelid Bags
Eye bag surgery or lower lid blepharoplasty is an aesthetic procedure used for removing bags from under the eye. Eye bags are often sought to be surgically removed when they start affecting the way a person feels about the way they look. The possibility of presenting a rejuvenated appearance can instill confidence in many.
The Eyelid Institute, led by oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Hui, provides eyelid bag removal procedures to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and surrounding communities.
Causes of Eye Bags
Age is the biggest cause for eye bags. However, in many people it is also caused by genetics. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed on people as young as teens. Baggy or puffy eyes are caused when naturally occurring pockets of fat below or around the eyes begin pushing the fat forward. This creates a bulge called a fat prolapse or herniated fat.
Eye Bag Surgery Procedure
Eye bag surgery involves muscle tightening, removal of excess skin and elevating the under eye fat for a more refreshed appearance. Lower lid blepharoplasty is performed by two primary surgical techniques:
Transcutaneous
Incision in this approach is made on the lower lid right below the lash line. Excess skin and muscles are trimmed in this procedure. Fat amount causing the bulge would be elevated.
Transconjunctival
There is zero scarring in a transconjunctival surgery. The incision is made within the lower lid. This is a salient option where the skin is tight and fat requires repositioning.
What Happens Before the Surgery?
Your surgeon will use a surgical pen to mark the lids while you remain seated. You would be given a topical numbing eye drops and local anesthesia in the lid area. The surgeon may also give you an intravenous sedation or general anesthesia to put you to sleep. The right approach would be discussed by you and your doctor.
What Happens During the Surgery?
The incision in this case would be made along the lower lash line. The surgeon will remove excess muscle, skin, and fat. They may also reposition the tissue. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions after the procedure.
What Happens After the Surgery?
You should be able to go home in a few hours after the surgery. The surgeon would give you a pain medication prescription that keeps you comfortable. You won’t require any bandages.
Additional Cosmetic Procedures
Eye bag surgery on its own may not be able to rejuvenate the way you look. You may want to get additional cosmetic procedures performed as well, such as:
- Simultaneous brow or midface lift
- Erbium YAG laser skin resurfacing
- Skin resurfacing using chemical peels
- Increasing under eye volume through hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers
Eye bag surgery can be performed with numerous other procedures. You may want to try a combination of these procedures for removing any remaining wrinkles and attaining the smooth contours that you want.
