Dr. Hui’s Talk at Bascom Palmer
In February of 2012, Dr. Hui gave a talk at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute 50th anniversary scientific meeting. She had served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, a leading US eye hospital, for three years as a member of the Oculoplastics department. At the meeting, Dr. Hui discussed a newly emerging etiology of excessive tearing (epiphora).
Traditionally, punctal plugs are placed to help people with dry eyes keep their ocular surfaces moist. In some cases, these plugs are the cause of tearing itself. Specifically, a newer type of plug that rests within the tear drainage system itself is associated with secondary infections, worsened tearing and migration. Dr. Hui discussed the symptoms, physical findings, and diagnostic testing and imaging available to treat and evaluate these patients.
