Eyelid Surgery – Palm Springs, Palm Desert

The eyes are not only an important feature of the face from an aesthetic perspective, but they are also the most delicate external part of the human body. Therefore, a procedure such as eyelid surgery should ideally be performed by an experienced oculoplastic surgeon. The procedure is designed to enhance the appearance of eyes, but it often helps achieve more than just a rejuvenated look.

Skin over the eyelids is the thinnest, which needs to be dealt with care in any invasive procedure. Eyelid tissue gets stretched with age, the muscles become weaker, and the fat begins to bulge. Apart from age factor, this condition can be caused due to hereditary reasons or excessive sun exposure.

The condition of excess eyelid tissue is clinically known as Dermatochalasis. This condition may occur in the lower or upper eyelids. The patient may experience heaviness in the eyelids, and obstruction of vision due to excess tissue. Forehead fatigue is another common complaint with this condition as the patient tries to lift the excess skin to reduce the heaviness. Upper blepharoplasty or upper eyelid surgery can help reduce excess skin, fat or muscle in the upper eyelids.

Drooping Eyelid Condition

Ptosis or drooping eyelid condition can also be corrected with eyelid surgery. Upper eyelid muscle is very delicate, and may weaken over time, causing the eyelid to sag. Ptosis repair procedure can be performed, with the oculoplastic surgeon making an incision on the inside of the upper eyelid or through a skin incision. Ptosis repair or upper lid blepharoplasty may be a medical necessity, depending on the individual patient’s condition. A visual field test can help determine whether the patient needs this procedure for medical reasons.

If the patient suffers from excess fat and loose skin in the lower eyelids, the surgeon may perform a lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Excess skin and fat tissue is removed through incisions. If the incision is made inside the eyelid, it will not leave a visible scar. However, even when the tiny incision is made on the skin, the scar is minimally visible, and usually fades over time.

Most eyelid surgery procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under IV sedation and local anesthesia. Pre-op preparation involves a detailed review of the patient’s medical and ophthalmic history. The surgeon will also consider if the patient is taking any kind of medications and herbal supplements, and their schedules may have to be adjusted in consultation with the physician.

Following the surgery, the patient will experience some swelling and bruising, which can be alleviated with ice packs. The surgery typically involves minimal down time, and most patients are able to go back to work within a week. The outcomes with eyelid surgery are usually long lasting. Patients can not only enjoy a rejuvenated look, but also feel lighter and see clearer.
