Trauma

The delicate tissues of the orbit and eyelids are often damaged in patients who experience facial trauma. A careful examination is first required to make sure the eye itself is not involved and to determine the extent of the injuries. The eyelid is composed of many fine layers whose integrity are vital to proper function.

Additionally, the lacrimal system may also be injured in patients with eyelid trauma. A detailed examination is need to make sure this system is intact as these injuries are often difficult to detect.

Lastly, the orbit itself may be involved. Patients may experience orbital fractures, penetrating orbital trauma and even orbital foreign bodies.

Any of these periocular injuries is potentially visually threatening, and an Oculoplastics specialist is uniquely trained to manage this delicate area.
