1. How long do I need to leave stitches in the operative site?
If they are not dissolvable stitches, 5-8 days. In most cases, dissolvable stitches are used.
2. What are the standard prescription instructions for each medication?
For eyelid and tear duct surgeries, ointment should be used 3x per day for 7 days then at bedtime for 7 days.
3. After surgery can I return to doing daily routines?
Do not shower for the first 24 hours after the surgery. After the first 24 hours you may shower, but do not allow the water to spray directly on the incision sites. Gently pat the eyes dry after showering.
Driving the next day is okay if your vision is not blurry. If you have surgery on both sides, we advise usually no driving for one week and then to use discretion. No swimming or heavy lifting for two weeks.
4. Can I drive after an in-office procedure?
If you receive sedation, such as Xanax or Valium, NO. Otherwise yes, depending on the procedure. Always check with the staff before leaving the office.
5. After surgery, how long is the usual recovery time?
Most of the swelling and bruising is gone in 2-3 weeks. Please note that swelling and bruising are often most evident 2-3 days following surgery. Recovery time varies depending on the patient.
6. Can I go back to school or work 1-2 days after surgery?
For major procedures, we ask you to do ice packs for the first 2 ½ days during the day. At least five days off after surgery is desirable and varies due to the type of surgery that was performed.
7. How much does insurance cover for my surgery and is there a co-payment?
This depends on your insurance plan. We can give you the proposed CPT codes and you can call the insurance company to see about the co-pay and/or deductible amounts. The office may also be able to assist in obtaining this information if you need any additional help.
8. Can I eat before surgery?
For all same day surgeries and some in-office procedures, you must fast for 8 hours prior. No food or drink is allowed. If you take blood pressure medications, please take them with a small sip of water the morning of the procedure. Children must fast for 6 hours before surgery. They can have clear liquids up to 2 hours before, which includes apple juice. If you have questions regarding your specific instructions, please do not hesitate to call our office.
